Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA)

Fruit South Africa (FSA) initiated its ethical trade programme in 2008, which was later formalised as the Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA). SIZA is a non-profit membership-based organisation that provides support to stakeholders in the supply chain who are committed to ethical compliance and the improvement of labour conditions on farms. Meaning “to help and support” in Zulu, SIZA promotes a South African Ethical Standard to be used as best practice. The Standard is aligned to South African law and meets international requirements, providing one standard and one ethical audit.

SIZA has two primary focus areas:

• Monitoring and verification of compliance and best practice on farms which take place through self-assessments and third party ethical audits conducted by independent audit bodies.
• A capacity-building programme to support growers and workers with implementation of ethical standard requirements through promoting awareness and understanding of the Standard as well as building practical skills.

SIZA membership is open to all supply chain stakeholders including industry associations, retailers, importers, exporters, packhouses, producers and service providers. Visit the SIZA website for more information on registering as a member:
